Tanikella Bharani and Ali appeared together in 15 Telugu films between 1994 and 2015. Their highest-rated collaboration was Shirdi Sai (2012 — 7.8/10). Films span Yamaleela (1994) through Ori Devudoy (2015).
The Tanikella Bharani & Ali partnership
Their work runs across 3 decades of Telugu cinema. They saved their best for last — Shirdi Sai (7.8/10) came 18 years in. 2000 was their peak — 4 films in twelve months.
For 21 years, a Tanikella–Ali film arrived almost every year. The work is uneven: Shirdi Sai (7.8) at one end, Ammo Okato Tarikhu (3.4) at the other.
The shape of the work
The 1990s belonged to Yamaleela; the 2010s to Shirdi Sai. Tanikella Bharani acted in every film; Ali acted in all of them. Strictly Telugu cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Their first film together, Andaru Herole (1998), almost didn't happen. Director K. S. Ravi Kumar cast Ali first, but Tanikella Bharani was hesitant to play a full-length comedic role alongside him. Ali personally convinced Bharani that their contrasting styles — Bharani's deadpan sarcasm vs. Ali's manic energy — would create something new.
- In Hungama (2005), Ali improvised a 4-minute rant about a missing chappal. Tanikella Bharani didn't interrupt — he just stood there, reacting with tiny eye movements and head tilts. That scene became the film's most replayed moment. Ali later said Bharani's silence was the best straight-man setup he ever got.
- On the sets of Ninne Premista (2000), Ali and Tanikella Bharani started a running bet: whoever flubbed a dialogue first had to buy the other a pack of cigarettes. By the end of the shoot, Bharani had quit smoking entirely — Ali claimed it was because Bharani never lost a single bet.
- The success of their double-act in Nuvvu Vastavani (2000) directly inspired director Vamsy to write a full-length comedy track for them in Jayam Manade Raa (2000). That track — where Ali plays a fake godman and Bharani his skeptical assistant — later became a template for Telugu comedy duos in the early 2000s.
- "Bharani garu is the only actor who can make me laugh without moving his face. I have to work ten times harder just to keep up with his stillness." — Ali, in a 2015 interview about Ori Devudoy.
- In Panjaa (2011), their only non-comedy pairing, Tanikella Bharani played a ruthless villain and Ali played his terrified henchman. Bharani deliberately refused to rehearse with Ali before takes, keeping Ali genuinely off-balance. The result: Ali's stammering fear in their scenes was completely real.
