Partnership facts

• Kamal Haasan was just 20 when he first acted with V. K. Ramasamy in *Cinema Paithiyam* (1975). Ramasamy was already a veteran character actor. Kamal later said he was nervous acting opposite someone who had shared screen space with M. G. Ramachandran.
• In *Enakkul Oruvan* (1984), Ramasamy played a strict father to Kamal's rebellious son. The tension in their scenes came from real-life respect — Kamal would deliberately underplay his lines so Ramasamy's booming voice could dominate. Kamal called it 'acting by listening'.
• Their 1981 film *Raja Paarvai* was Kamal's first production venture. He cast Ramasamy as the hero's blind father. The film's success gave Kamal the confidence to produce more experimental films. Without this collaboration, Kamal's production house might never have taken off.
• On the sets of *Japanil Kalyanaraman* (1985), Ramasamy would bring homemade snacks for the crew. Kamal would sit with him during lunch breaks, discussing old Tamil plays. Ramasamy once told a journalist that Kamal was the only young actor who asked him about his theatre days.
• Kamal Haasan said about Ramasamy: 'He taught me that a supporting actor doesn't support the hero — he supports the story. I learned more from his silences than from my own dialogues.'
• Their last film together was *Maharasan* (1993). By then, Ramasamy was in his 70s and Kamal was a superstar. Kamal personally requested the director to cast Ramasamy as his on-screen father — a role that had no lines in the climax, just a long, wordless stare. Ramasamy later said that stare was the best scene of his career.
