The Paresh Rawal & Naseeruddin Shah partnership

After 10 years apart, they came back together for Mere Baap Pehle Aap (2008). They didn't share a set between 1998 and 2008. They saved their best for last — Firaaq (6.8/10) came 25 years in.

Their work runs across 4 decades of Hindi cinema. From Lorie (1984) to Welcome Back (2015).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Lorie; the 2010s to Welcome Back. Paresh Rawal acted in every film; Naseeruddin Shah acted in all of them.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Mirch Masala (1987), was a Ketan Mehta period drama. Naseeruddin Shah was already a star. Paresh Rawal was still a theatre actor finding his footing. Rawal later said he was so nervous on set that Naseer quietly told him, 'Just react. Don't act.' That line became Rawal's mantra for years.
  • In Mohra (1994), Naseer played the villain, Paresh played a comic sidekick. They had zero scenes together. But off-camera, Naseer spent hours rehearsing Paresh's comic lines with him. Paresh later admitted Naseer's timing suggestions made his 'Mogambo khush hua' style delivery sharper.
  • Their 2008 film Maharathi was a dark comedy thriller that flopped. But it directly inspired a Gujarati stage adaptation that ran for 500+ shows. The play's director credited the 'raw, unpolished tension' between Naseer and Paresh as the reason he adapted it for theatre.
  • On the sets of Sir (1993), Paresh Rawal's father passed away. Naseeruddin Shah quietly took over his scenes for two days, telling the director, 'Let him go. I'll cover.' Paresh never forgot it. Decades later, he called Naseer 'the only co-star who became family without ever saying it.'
  • Naseeruddin Shah on Paresh Rawal, in a 2015 interview: 'Paresh is the only actor I've worked with who can make me forget my lines. He'll do something so unexpected that I just stand there, laughing, and the director has to yell cut.'
