The Delhi Ganesh & Manorama partnership
Their work runs across 4 decades of Tamil cinema. They saved their best for last — Saamy (6.9/10) came 21 years in. 1990 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months.
From Simla Special (1982) to Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam (2010). It started with Simla Special (1982).
The shape of the work
The 1980s belonged to Apoorva Sagodharargal; the 2010s to Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam. Delhi Ganesh acted in every film; Manorama acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Their first film together, Simla Special (1982), was a comedy where Delhi Ganesh played a bumbling father and Manorama played his sharp-tongued wife. The director, Manivannan, reportedly cast them after seeing their timing in a stage play — and the pair clicked so instantly that he wrote more scenes for them on the spot.
- On set, Delhi Ganesh would deliberately flub his lines to make Manorama break character. She'd then improvise a comeback that was funnier than the script. This back-and-forth became their trademark — especially in Anni (1985), where their squabbling scenes were mostly unscripted.
- Off-screen, Manorama called Delhi Ganesh 'Anna' (elder brother) and he called her 'Mano' — but they never once had a meal together. She was a strict vegetarian who wouldn't eat from the same kitchen as non-veg food, and he was a heavy non-vegetarian. So they'd sit at separate tables between shots, still cracking jokes across the room.
- Their pairing in Periya Gounder Ponnu (1992) was so beloved that the director, K. S. Ravikumar, later cast them as a married couple in three more films — including the hit Vaanchinathan (2001). That film's comic track between them was directly inspired by their earlier work, and it became a template for 'bickering old couple' roles in Tamil cinema for the next decade.
- Delhi Ganesh once said in an interview: 'Mano would look at me during a scene and I'd know exactly what she was thinking. We didn't need to rehearse. She'd just raise an eyebrow and I'd know the next line was mine to mess up.'
- Their last film together, Azhagesan (2004), almost didn't happen. Manorama was recovering from a knee surgery and Delhi Ganesh had a fever on the first day of shoot. But both insisted on finishing their scenes in one take each — because, as the crew later recalled, 'they didn't want to waste each other's time.'
