The Roja Selvamani & Vijayakumar partnership

They saved their best for last — Parama Veera Chakra (5.8/10) came 18 years in. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. From Uzhaippali (1993) to Parama Veera Chakra (2011).

It started with Uzhaippali (1993).

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Bhairava Dweepam; the 2010s to Parama Veera Chakra. Roja Selvamani acted in every film; Vijayakumar acted in all of them. Mostly Tamil, with 2 films in Telugu.

Partnership facts

  • For Raasaiyya (1995), director K. S. Ravi Kumar was struggling to find a heroine who could play a village belle with grit. Vijayakumar personally recommended Roja Selvamani after seeing her in a small role — he told the press she had 'fire in her eyes.' That recommendation got her the part.
  • On the sets of En Aasai Rasave (1998), Roja Selvamani would deliberately flub her lines in the first take to make Vijayakumar laugh. He then started improvising his reactions to throw her off. The director had to yell 'cut' multiple times because both were cracking up mid-scene.
  • After Parama Veera Chakra (2011) wrapped, Roja Selvamani and Vijayakumar stopped speaking for nearly two years. The reason? A heated argument over who got the better song sequence in the film. They only patched up at a mutual friend's wedding in 2013.
  • The success of Raasaiyya (1995) directly led to director K. S. Ravi Kumar casting the same pair again in En Aasai Rasave (1998). That second film's soundtrack, composed by Deva, became a chartbuster — and it was Roja who convinced Vijayakumar to push for a re-recording of the title track, which ended up being the film's biggest hit.
  • Roja Selvamani once said in a 2012 interview: 'Vijayakumar sir is the only co-star who made me forget my lines because I was laughing so hard. He'd do this thing with his eyebrows — I'd lose it every time.'
