Vadivelu and Raj Kapoor appeared together in 8 Tamil films between 2003 and 2009. Their highest-rated collaboration was Giri (2004 — 6.8/10). Films span Winner (2003) through Villu (2009).
The Vadivelu & Raj Kapoor partnership
Between 2003 and 2009, they barely worked apart — 8 films in 6 years. For 6 years, a Vadivelu–Raj film arrived almost every year. From Winner (2003) to Villu (2009).
It started with Winner (2003).
The shape of the work
Vadivelu acted in every film; Raj Kapoor acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Vadivelu was not the first choice for Madhurey. Director Ramana originally wanted a different comedian. But Vadivelu heard the script, loved the role of the sidekick 'Kovilpatti', and personally convinced the director he could add more comedy. He ended up rewriting most of his own lines.
- In Thambi (2006), Raj Kapoor played a serious, stoic elder brother. Vadivelu played his loud, comic sidekick. The trick was that Vadivelu never tried to outshine Raj Kapoor's emotional scenes — he deliberately toned down his comedy in those moments, letting the drama breathe. Raj Kapoor later said that restraint made their scenes together work.
- They were close friends off-screen. During the shoot of Kusthi (2006), Vadivelu would often drive to Raj Kapoor's house unannounced, and they'd spend hours discussing comedy timing and old Tamil films. Raj Kapoor's wife once joked that Vadivelu visited more than her own relatives.
- Raj Kapoor once said in an interview: 'Vadivelu is the only comedian who can make me laugh even when I'm in a bad mood. On the sets of Villu, I was exhausted, but he'd do one line and I'd forget my tiredness.'
- Their pairing in Madhurey (2004) was so popular that it directly led to director Ramana casting them together again in Thambi (2006). That film became a sleeper hit, and the duo's comic-relief track was widely imitated in later Tamil films — especially the 'Kovilpatti' style of fast-paced, rural slang comedy.
