Partnership facts

• They first met on the sets of 'Manjal Mugame Varuga' (1975) because the director, A. C. Tirulokchandar, specifically wanted a fresh pair. Vijayakumar was already a known face, but Sathyapriya was a newcomer. He later said he was nervous acting opposite her because she was so composed from day one.
• In 'Dheepam' (1977), Sathyapriya played a blind woman. Vijayakumar deliberately slowed down his dialogue delivery in their scenes together so she could react naturally. He told a magazine later that he learned to 'listen with his eyes' because of her performance in that film.
• After 'Pilot Premnath' (1978) flopped, Vijayakumar and Sathyapriya didn't work together for 14 years. They reconnected only when Sathyapriya personally called him to play her husband in 'Pangali' (1992). She later admitted she was nervous he'd say no, but he agreed without reading the script.
• Their pairing in 'Baashha' (1995) — where they played Rajinikanth's parents — directly led to both of them being typecast as 'ideal parents' in the 1990s. Before that film, they were known as romantic leads. After it, every other director wanted them as a mom-dad duo.
• Sathyapriya once said in a 2002 interview: 'Vijayakumar is the only co-star who never once made me feel like I was acting. With him, I was just living the scene.' She said this while promoting 'Ezhumalai', their last film together.
