Partnership facts

• They first shared screen space in 'Thangathile Vairam' (1975), but the pairing almost didn't happen. Director S. P. Muthuraman wanted a different actress for Manorama's role; Moorthy insisted she was the only one who could match his comic timing. Muthuraman gave in after Moorthy refused to shoot without her.
• Moorthy was the straight man who set the rhythm; Manorama was the one who broke it. In 'Muyalakku Moonu Kaal' (1980), she would deliberately pause mid-dialogue to throw him off, forcing him to improvise. He later said that unpredictability made their scenes feel alive.
• Their comedy track in 'Nadigan' (1990) — where Moorthy plays a henpecked husband and Manorama his overbearing mother-in-law — became the template for a dozen similar pairings in 90s Tamil cinema. Director Parthiban directly credited their rhythm for inspiring the family-comedy genre in his later films.
• On every single film set, Manorama would bring homemade snacks for Moorthy. He had a strict diet, so she made him special low-oil murukku. This went on for 28 years — even after the films stopped, she'd send parcels to his home.
• Manorama once said in a 1998 interview: 'Moorthy is the only actor who can make me laugh even when I'm angry. He knows exactly when to step back and let me take the scene. That's rare.'
• In 'En Kitta Mothathey' (1990), they played a bickering couple. Moorthy would deliberately flub his lines in the first take to make Manorama laugh, breaking her concentration. She'd then retaliate by adding extra dialogue he hadn't rehearsed. The final cut used their second takes — where both were fully alert and sharp.
