Nagesh and V. K. Ramasamy appeared together in 25 Tamil films between 1964 and 1982. Their highest-rated collaboration was Mahakavi Kalidas (1966 — 7.8/10). Films span Navarathri (1964) through Vaa Kanna Vaa (1982).
The Nagesh & V. K. Ramasamy partnership
Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. 1966 was their peak — 4 films in twelve months. For 18 years, a Nagesh–V. film arrived almost every year.
Remarkably even — every film rates between 7.1 and 7.8. From Navarathri (1964) to Vaa Kanna Vaa (1982).
The shape of the work
The 1960s belonged to Mahakavi Kalidas; the 1980s to Vaa Kanna Vaa. Nagesh acted in every film; V. K. Ramasamy acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Their first film together, Nadodi (1966), almost didn't happen. Director M. G. Balu had to convince a reluctant Nagesh to play the villain opposite V. K. Ramasamy's lead — Nagesh thought the role was too small.
- In Kudiyirundha Koyil (1968), Nagesh and Ramasamy built their comedy scenes by trading insults in real time — no written dialogue. The director just gave them a situation and let them go. The scene where they argue over a stolen idli is still a fan favourite.
- Their 1972 hit Vasantha Maligai directly launched the career of composer M. S. Viswanathan's assistant, who went on to become Ilaiyaraaja. The film's songs were his first major break as an arranger.
- On the sets of Ooty Varai Uravu (1967), Nagesh and Ramasamy made a pact: whoever finished their shot first would buy the other a cup of filter coffee. They kept this ritual going for every film they did together over the next 15 years.
- Nagesh once said about Ramasamy: 'He was the only actor who could make me forget my lines — because I'd be laughing so hard at his timing that I'd miss my cue.'
