• Charlie was a popular comedian when he was cast opposite Vijayakumar in 'Uyire Unakkaga' (1986). But the director hesitated — he thought a comedian couldn't pull off a serious romantic lead. Vijayakumar personally vouched for Charlie, telling the crew, 'Let him try one scene. If it fails, I'll reshoot it at my cost.' That scene stayed in the final cut.
• On the set of 'Kilipetchu Ketkava' (1993), Vijayakumar would deliberately flub his lines in the first take. He knew Charlie was a perfectionist with dialogue. The frustration would make Charlie over-prepare for the next take, and Vijayakumar would then deliver his lines flawlessly — pushing Charlie to match his intensity. It became their unspoken game across all nine films.
• Their 1995 film 'Oru Oorla Oru Rajakumari' directly launched the career of composer Deva. Before this, Deva was an unknown assistant. Vijayakumar insisted on giving him a break, and Charlie convinced the producer to let Deva score the entire film. The soundtrack became a sleeper hit, and Deva went on to become one of Tamil cinema's most bankable music directors of the 1990s.
• After every single film wrap, Charlie and Vijayakumar would drive to the same small tea stall in Kodambakkam — even if the shoot was in a different city. They'd sit on plastic stools and argue about cricket for exactly one hour before heading home. They kept this ritual for all nine films, from 1986 to 2002.
• Charlie once said in a 2004 interview: 'Vijayakumar is the only co-star who made me forget I was acting. When he looks at you in a scene, you don't feel the camera. You feel like you're in trouble with your older brother.'
