• Their first film together, Raghupathi Raghavan Rajaram (1977), was directed by SP Muthuraman. Muthuraman had already cast Vijayakumar as the lead, but Rajinikanth was a relatively new face then. The director took a chance pairing them, and the film became a hit — setting the template for their many collaborations.
• In Aarupushpangal (1977), Rajinikanth played a negative role while Vijayakumar was the hero. Their contrasting energies — Vijayakumar's calm, dignified presence against Rajinikanth's raw, unpredictable menace — made the film a talking point. Audiences loved watching them clash.
