The 1960s account for 63% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Oli Vilakku; the 1970s to Neerum Neruppum. M. G. Ramachandran acted in every film; Jayalalitha acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

• Their first film together, Ayirathil Oruvan (1965), almost didn't happen. MGR was already a superstar. Jayalalitha was just 17 and new to Tamil cinema. Director B. R. Panthulu pushed for her, and MGR agreed only after seeing her screen test.
• On set, MGR controlled the pace — he was the senior star and dictated the shot compositions. But Jayalalitha brought a sharp comic timing that he lacked. In Kaavalkaaran (1967), she improvised a line during a fight scene that made MGR break character and laugh. They kept the take.
• Off-screen, MGR treated Jayalalitha like a younger sister. He personally taught her how to ride a horse for a scene in Thanipiravi (1966). She later said he was the only co-star who never made her feel uncomfortable during romantic scenes.
• Their 1968 hit Oli Vilakku directly inspired the 1970s trend of 'family socials' in Tamil cinema — films where a strong male lead and a witty female lead solve domestic problems. Without this film, you wouldn't have had Sivaji Ganesan's later family dramas with similar dynamics.
• Jayalalitha once said in a 1972 interview: 'MGR sir never let me feel like a newcomer. He would rehearse scenes with me before the director arrived. He made me look good.'
• After their last film together in 1973, they never spoke again. MGR entered politics full-time, and Jayalalitha followed years later — but as a rival party leader. Their on-screen partnership ended cold, and neither ever publicly explained why.
