Vijayakumar and Manorama appeared together in 33 Tamil films between 1974 and 2013. Their highest-rated collaboration was Dheepam (1977 — 7.5/10). Films span Murugan Kattiya Vazhi (1974) through Singam II (2013).
The Vijayakumar & Manorama partnership
Their work runs across 5 decades of Tamil cinema. 1978 was their peak — 4 films in twelve months. For 39 years, a Vijayakumar–Manorama film arrived almost every year.
The work is uneven: Dheepam (7.5) at one end, Muthu Kaalai (1.0) at the other. From Murugan Kattiya Vazhi (1974) to Singam II (2013).
The shape of the work
The 1970s belonged to Dheepam; the 2010s to Singam II. Vijayakumar acted in every film; Manorama acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Their first film together, Murugan Kattiya Vazhi (1974), almost didn't happen. Director A. P. Nagarajan wanted a bigger star for the female lead, but Manorama insisted on Vijayakumar, saying he had the right 'innocent face' for the role.
- On set, Manorama would often improvise her lines in rapid-fire Tamil, and Vijayakumar would slow down his delivery to match her rhythm. He later said she forced him to become a better listener on screen.
- Their 1978 hit Aayiram Jenmangal directly inspired the 1990s trend of reincarnation love stories in Tamil cinema. Director K. Balachander reportedly told a journalist that film was the reason he greenlit a similar script years later.
- Off-screen, they had a running bet on every film: whoever flubbed a dialogue first had to buy the other a box of Mysore Pak. Manorama lost most bets because she kept laughing mid-scene.
- Vijayakumar once told a fan magazine: 'Manorama didn't act with me. She fought with me on screen. That's why every scene felt real.'
- In Dheepam (1977), Vijayakumar's character was written as a stoic husband, but Manorama kept adding small gestures — touching his hand, adjusting his collar — that made him break character and smile. The director kept those takes in the final cut.
