Partnership facts

• Brahmanandam once said Venu Madhav was the only co-star who could make him break character mid-scene. In 'Hungama' (2005), Venu's improvised stammer during a chase sequence made Brahmanandam laugh so hard they had to reshoot the entire take.
• They had a standing bet on every film set: whoever flubbed a dialogue first had to buy the entire crew lunch. Venu Madhav lost 18 of their 24 films together, mostly because Brahmanandam would deliberately feed him wrong lines during rehearsals.
• Their first film together, 'Azad' (2000), almost didn't happen. The director wanted a younger comedian for Venu's role, but Brahmanandam insisted on casting him after seeing Venu's stage act in a small Vijayawada theater. He told the producer: 'If he's not in this film, I walk.'
• Their double-act in 'Sri Krishna 2006' (2006) — where they played a bumbling priest and his equally clueless assistant — directly inspired the comedy track in the 2012 blockbuster 'Gabbar Singh'. Director Harish Shankar admitted he rewatched their scenes from that film to study the timing.
• Venu Madhav once told a TV interviewer: 'Brahmanandam garu doesn't just give you a scene — he gives you a license to be stupid. With him, I could try anything. If it bombed, he'd cover it. If it worked, he'd let me take the credit.'
• In 'Blade Babji' (2008), they shot a 12-minute single-take comedy sequence where Brahmanandam played the straight man for the first time in their partnership. Venu Madhav had to carry the entire comic load — and Brahmanandam later said it was the most nervous he'd ever been on set, because he had no idea what Venu would do next.
